An Ebb and Flow Tray, also known as a flood and drain tray, is an irrigation system designed to provide controlled irrigation to plants. Ebb and Flow trays have been used in greenhouses for many years. They consist of a flat, table-like structure with a surface where plants are placed, and are equipped with a network of drainage channels or grooves where water can flow.

These trays are designed with a network of drainage channels to serve specific purposes. During irrigation, the trays evenly distribute water that has been mixed with nutrients throughout the entire table, ensuring all plants receive adequate watering simultaneously. The water is then absorbed by the plants. After the irrigation cycle, the trays drain the remaining water evenly, preventing any plants from sitting in standing water. Before returning to the central reservoir, the water is filtered and treated so it can be reused for future irrigation cycles.

About Ebb and Flow Trays

Ebb and Flow irrigation trays are the world’s most frequently used system for growing plants in modern greenhouses.

At Stål & Plast we produce and distribute an Ebb and Flow irrigation tray program that is the world’s best and most complete.

Benefits of Stål & Plast Ebb and Flow Trays include:

  • Reduced water and nutrient consumption, when compared to traditional irrigation systems
  • Reduced time and labor costs
  • Fast turnaround of crops
  • Improved plant health and reduced risk of diseases
  • Equal water distribution results in a very uniform crop
  • Simple and reliable system
  • Easy-to-maintain

Area of Application of Ebb and Flow Trays

Ebb and Flow trays are popular for indoor grow facilities, commercial greenhouses, and cannabis cultivation, due to their water conservation benefits and ability to provide precise hydration levels tailored to specific climates. Moreover, the trays can be used for:

  • Young plants
  • Bedding plants
  • Potted plants
  • Herbs

In addition to the Ebb and Flow irrigation principle, our trays are also commonly used to collect excess water from drip irrigation.

Additional Benefits of Using our Ebb and Flow Trays

We are continually developing our tray technology for more diverse uses.

How it works:

  1. The irrigation water is mixed with nutrients and pumped onto the tables
  2. The water is absorbed by the grow media and eventually distributed to the roots
  3. The water is filtered and treated before it is returned to the central reservoir
  4. The water is reused for future irrigation cycles

Water levels, irrigation time, and nutrient concentration can be customized to plants’ exact needs. Once these parameters are set, the process can be accurately and continuously repeated as your plants reap the benefits.
